"I can't in all honesty tell you how many Busker shows I played during the 90's. I remember doing a number of Green Room shows, and then at least two 'away gigs' in Romiley and Bury. Some memories will be with me forever. Constant amazement at the rollercoaster high standard of the shows; the 4 hour marathon at Bury Met; sneaking artiste's families through the Green Room fire exit; the unexpected and the mighty and playing my songs in the middle of it all. Beautiful ... There is the regret of the 'Loony' episode with that wonderful eccentric and brilliant man Screaming Lord Sutch. We had a fantastic election campaign, and yet gatecrashing the Busker to canvas for votes on an orange space hopper was not one of my finest moments! I don't think there is just one thing that made the Busker so special, although if pushed for a reply I'd have to say the very concept itself. Of course having an inspired idea and making it happen are two entirely different things, and that is where the magic dust took over ... it was made and kept special by people shining at their brightest and of course, sharing. Then there's the added bonus of how so many have gone on to form creative careers, some to the very top of the fame and showbusiness league. They are not the only success stories though, and I think there was such a spirit of accomplishment around the 'scene' at that time, that everyone came away feeling great about what they were doing creatively. There is a bit of myself that feels envy I guess, and there will be in many of the others, towards those who've made it to much greater things, however life is a mix of rainbows, and personally I feel grateful to have achieved and experienced what I have in my own life and career. And I know also the likes of Steve, Henry, Caroline, Lemn, Dave Gorman et al are all very decent and wonderful people, truly deserving of their success in respect of their focus, determination and hard work. The brightest star of all though? Well, Chris in his own inimitable way made so many things happen, for so many. Truly making it ..." |
